Differences in Electrical and Thermal Conductivity Between T2/TU2 Copper Rods and Oxygen-Free Copper

How to Choose the Perfect Copper Grade for High-Voltage Distribution, New Energy Busbars, and Precision Vacuum Electrical Components

Industry Insight

Understanding High-Purity Copper Rods in Modern Engineering

Copper rods have a much wider range of applications than pure iron. Every year, 50% of copper is electrolytically refined into pure copper for use in the electrical industry. The copper referred to here must indeed be extremely pure, containing at least 99.95% copper. Even trace amounts of impurities, especially phosphorus, arsenic, and aluminum, can significantly reduce copper's conductivity.

The presence of oxygen in copper (small amounts are easily introduced during copper smelting) greatly affects conductivity; copper used in the electrical industry must generally be oxygen-free. Furthermore, impurities such as lead, antimony, and bismuth can prevent copper crystals from bonding together, causing hot brittleness and affecting the processing of pure copper.

This high-purity copper is generally refined using electrolysis: impure copper (i.e., crude copper) is used as the anode, pure copper as the cathode, and copper sulfate solution as the electrolyte. When current flows, the impure copper on the anode gradually melts, and pure copper gradually precipitates on the cathode. Copper refined in this way can achieve a purity of 99.99%. Red copper is a relatively pure type of copper, generally considered to be close to pure copper. It has good electrical conductivity and ductility, but its strength and hardness are somewhat inferior.

T2 Pure Copper vs. TU2 Oxygen-Free Copper

A comprehensive comparison of physical, thermal, mechanical, and economic parameters to assist your engineering design decisions.

Performance Dimension T2 Tough Pitch Copper (ETP) TU2 Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC) Engineering Impact & Selection Rule
Copper Purity (Cu + Ag) ≥ 99.90% ≥ 99.95% TU2 offers higher base metal purity, reducing electron scattering.
Oxygen Content (O) ≤ 0.06% (typically 200-400 ppm) ≤ 0.002% (typically ≤ 20 ppm) T2 is susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement; TU2 is completely immune.
20°C Electrical Conductivity ≥ 97% - 100% IACS ≥ 100% - 102% IACS TU2 reduces power loss and Joule heating in ultra-high current applications.
Thermal Conductivity ~ 390 W/(m·K) ≥ 397 W/(m·K) TU2 dissipates heat faster, crucial for high-power density cooling elements.
Electrical Resistivity (ρ20) ≤ 0.0178 μΩ·m ≤ 0.0171 μΩ·m TU2 exhibits lower resistance, minimizing voltage drops.
Softening Temperature ~ 200°C - 260°C ~ 350°C - 380°C TU2 retains mechanical strength better under short-term thermal overloads.
Porosity & Micro-defects Moderate (distribution of Cu2O) Extremely Low (dense matrix) TU2 is ideal for high-vacuum, high-frequency, and sputtering components.
Processing Plasticity Excellent bending and drawing Superior deep drawing and extrusion TU2 is highly suited for severe deformation and complex stamping.
High-Temp Oxidation Prone to surface scaling > 300°C Excellent resistance under inert/vacuum TU2 is mandatory for vacuum brazed assemblies.
Relative Sourcing Price Baseline Cost Premium (+ 5% to 15% over T2) Choose T2 for general electrical; TU2 for high-end vacuum/EV components.

Deep Dive: Electrical & Thermal Performance Mechanics

Why microscopic purity translates to macroscopic efficiency in power transmission and thermal management.

The Electrical Conductivity Discrepancy

In T2 copper (Electrolytic Tough Pitch), oxygen is present in the form of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) particles distributed along the grain boundaries. While this does not drastically lower room-temperature conductivity for basic applications, these oxide inclusions act as scattering centers for free conduction electrons. Under high-amperage conditions, this scattering increases electrical resistance, leading to elevated Joule heating (I2R losses).

In contrast, TU2 Oxygen-Free Copper is processed in a strictly controlled reducing atmosphere, keeping oxygen levels below 0.002%. With virtually no cuprous oxide inclusions, the crystalline lattice is highly uniform. Free electrons navigate the lattice with minimal impedance, enabling TU2 to consistently reach and exceed 100% IACS conductivity, ensuring cooler operation under heavy electrical loads.

Thermal Conductivity & High-Temperature Behavior

Thermal conduction in metals is closely linked to electrical conduction, governed by the Wiedemann-Franz Law. The micro-purity of TU2 yields a thermal conductivity of 397 W/(m·K), facilitating rapid heat transfer away from hot junctions. This makes it the premier choice for heat sinks, liquid-cooled conductors, and high-frequency induction coils.

Furthermore, when exposed to temperatures exceeding 400°C in hydrogen-containing environments, T2 copper experiences "hydrogen embrittlement" (hydrogen diffuses into the copper and reacts with Cu2O to form water vapor, creating high-pressure steam pockets that crack the grain boundaries). TU2 is completely immune to this phenomenon, making it the only viable option for hydrogen-cooled generators, vacuum brazing, and high-temperature industrial furnaces.

Industrial Product Selection Guide & Decision Matrix

Use these engineering rules of thumb and structured templates to optimize your material procurement strategy.

Rule 1: Operating Atmosphere

If the component undergoes processing or operation at temperatures above 350°C in the presence of reducing gases (hydrogen, carbon monoxide), TU2 Oxygen-Free Copper is mandatory. Using T2 will result in micro-cracking and catastrophic mechanical failure.

Safety Critical

Rule 2: Voltage & Frequency

For high-voltage applications (>10kV) or high-frequency systems where the skin effect dominates, choose TU2 to minimize dielectric losses and prevent arc-over caused by micro-impurities. For standard low-voltage distribution, T2 is the cost-effective industry standard.

Performance Optimized

Rule 3: Machining & Forming

For complex geometries involving severe cold bending, deep drawing, or impact extrusion, TU2 provides superior elongation and ductility without work-hardening excessively, resulting in fewer scrap parts during fabrication.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Get professional answers to critical technical and commercial questions regarding copper rod sourcing.

How can I verify the material purity and oxygen content of your copper rods?

Every shipment from Shandong Baimaoxing Iron and Steel is accompanied by a comprehensive EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Certificate (MTC). The certificate details the exact chemical composition (including copper purity ≥ 99.95% for TU2), oxygen content measured in parts per million (ppm), electrical conductivity (% IACS), and tensile strength properties.

What precision cutting and processing services do you offer?

We offer a wide range of in-house fabrication services, including high-precision band saw cutting, CNC machining, bending, punch hole drilling, and customized surface treatments such as electro-tinning, nickel plating, or silver plating to prevent oxidation at contact points.

How do you prevent oxidation and rust during long-distance maritime export?

We utilize a multi-layered protective packaging system. First, the copper rods are wrapped in Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) paper or plastic film to neutralize moisture. They are then vacuum sealed, packed into heavy-duty fumigated wooden boxes, and secured with steel strapping to prevent movement and physical damage during transit.

What is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) and lead time?

Our standard MOQ is 5000 KG (5 Metric Tons) per size. For standard stock dimensions, we can arrange shipment within 7-10 business days. For customized dimensions, special profiles, or specific alloy compositions, the lead time typically ranges from 15 to 25 days depending on production schedule.
