Selection Guide for Carbon Steel Pipe (Sch40/Sch80): Wall Thickness, Pressure Ratings, and Fluid Transport

Mastering ASME B36.10M Standards, Barlow's Pressure Calculations, and Structural vs. Fluid Grade Sizing for Global Engineering Integrity

Understanding Carbon Steel Pipe Classifications

CARBON STEEL PIPE is the backbone of modern industrial infrastructure. Carbon steel pipes are classified into two categories: hot-rolled and cold-rolled (drawn) steel pipes.

Hot-rolled carbon steel pipes include general steel pipes, low and medium pressure boiler steel pipes, high pressure boiler steel pipes, alloy steel pipes, stainless steel pipes, petroleum cracking pipes, geological steel pipes, and other steel pipes.

Cold-rolled (drawn) carbon steel pipes, in addition to the general steel pipes, low and medium pressure boiler steel pipes, high pressure boiler steel pipes, alloy steel pipes, stainless steel pipes, petroleum cracking pipes, and other steel pipes, also include carbon thin-walled steel pipes, alloy thin-walled steel pipes, stainless thin-walled steel pipes, and special-shaped steel pipes. Hot-rolled seamless pipes generally have an outer diameter greater than 32mm and a wall thickness of 2.5-75mm. Cold-rolled seamless steel pipes can have an outer diameter down to 6mm and a wall thickness down to 0.25mm. Thin-walled pipes can have an outer diameter down to 5mm and a wall thickness less than 0.25mm. Cold-rolled pipes have higher dimensional accuracy than hot-rolled pipes.

Manufacturing Metallurgy & Mechanical Integrity

General carbon steel pipes are made from high-quality carbon structural steels such as 10, 20, 30, 35, and 45, low-alloy structural steels such as 16Mn and 5MnV, or alloy steels such as 40Cr, 30CrMnSi, 45Mn2, and 40MnB, through hot rolling or cold rolling. Seamless pipes made from low-carbon steels such as 10 and 20 are mainly used for fluid transportation pipelines. Seamless pipes made from medium-carbon steels such as 45 and 40Cr are used to manufacture mechanical parts, such as load-bearing parts for automobiles and tractors. General-purpose carbon steel pipes must guarantee strength and pass flattening tests. Hot-rolled steel pipes are delivered in hot-rolled or heat-treated condition; cold-rolled pipes are delivered in heat-treated condition.

Comparison of International Standards: ASTM A53, API 5L, GB/T 3091, GB/T 8163

Avoid project delays and returns by understanding the critical chemical, testing, and application differences.

One of the most common pain points for overseas buyers is standard mismatch—ordering structural-grade pipes when high-pressure fluid pipes are required. At Shandong Bamaoxing Steel Co., Ltd., we address this issue head-on by providing dual-standard certified carbon steel pipes, ensuring your order complies fully with local design codes.

ASTM A53 vs. API 5L

ASTM A53 is primarily designed for low-pressure fluid transport (water, air, steam) and structural applications. It is tested for mechanical properties, bending, and flattening.
API 5L (Grade B to X80) is a line pipe standard designed specifically for oil, gas, and petrochemical transmission. API 5L requires more stringent chemical purity (lower sulfur/phosphorus) and mandatory non-destructive testing (NDT).

GB/T 8163 vs. GB/T 3091

In Chinese national standards, GB/T 8163 governs seamless steel pipes for liquid service (comparable to ASTM A106/A53 Grade B). In contrast, GB/T 3091 is designated for welded pipes carrying low-pressure fluids. Utilizing GB/T 3091 in high-temperature or high-pressure environments can lead to catastrophic line failures. We help you map these to ASTM/ASME standards seamlessly.

Pressure Rating Calculations & Barlow's Formula

How to design for safety using material yield strengths and allowable stress limits.

The Barlow Formula

Barlow's formula relates the internal pressure of a pipe to its dimensions and the allowable stress of its material:

P = (2 * S * t) / D
  • P = Internal Design Pressure (psi or MPa)
  • S = Allowable Stress of Material (psi or MPa)
  • t = Nominal Wall Thickness (inches or mm)
  • D = Outside Diameter (inches or mm)

Note: A safety factor (typically 0.6 to 0.72 for oil/gas pipelines) is applied to the allowable stress to ensure safe operations.

Allowable Stress (S) for Key Materials

Allowable stress limits vary by steel grade and design temperature. Standard values at ambient temperature (20°C / 68°F) include:

Steel Grade Yield Strength (Min) Allowable Stress (S)
Q235B 235 MPa 137 MPa
Q355B 355 MPa 207 MPa
ASTM A106 Gr. B 240 MPa (35 ksi) 137 MPa (20 ksi)
API 5L X52 360 MPa (52 ksi) 208 MPa (30 ksi)
API 5L X65 450 MPa (65 ksi) 260 MPa (37.7 ksi)

Fluid Selection & Cost-Performance Optimization

Selecting the right wall schedule for Water, Gas, Oil, and Steam systems.

Fluid Sizing Matrix

Choosing between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 is not just a matter of safety—it is a critical commercial decision. Below is the typical selection guide by fluid type:

  • Water Systems: Low pressure (under 150 psi) systems typically use Sch40. High-rise risers or municipal mains with water hammer risks require Sch80.
  • Natural Gas: Low-pressure distribution lines use Sch40. High-pressure transmission lines (above 300 psi) require Sch80 or higher.
  • Crude Oil: Hydrocarbon transport lines rely heavily on API 5L X52/X60 in Sch80 configurations to handle crude viscosity and high pressures.
  • High-Temp Steam: Steam systems demand ASTM A106 Grade B or Grade C. Due to thermal expansion stresses and high pressures, Schedule 80 or Schedule 160 is standard.

Sch40 vs. Sch80 Cost Difference Ratio

Because steel is sold by weight, the cost difference between Sch40 and Sch80 scales directly with wall thickness. For example, at NPS 4 (DN100):

  • ⚖️ Sch40 Weight: 16.07 kg/m
  • ⚖️ Sch80 Weight: 22.32 kg/m
  • 📈 Weight Increase: ~39%

This means Sch80 pipes will cost approximately 35% to 45% more per meter in raw material costs than Sch40 pipes. Therefore, specifying Sch80 when Sch40 is structurally sufficient adds unnecessary overhead to your project budget.
